If you are planning on having weight loss surgery; the gastric bypass diet will be an important part of what you will be learning prior to having this medical procedure. It may sound kind of scary at first, but it will be what will nourish you for at least 8 weeks following your surgery and it is a temporary part of the recovery process that will pass quickly.
The first step of this diet is clear liquids and gelatin and is administered while you are in the hospital. The second step of the bariatric surgery diet consists of strained pureed foods, baby food and/or drinks high in protein. This part of the food plan will last 2 to 8 weeks depending on how you are feeling and how your recovery is progressing. Some people do not have an appetite for a few months.
You will enter into the last step of this diet at about 2 months post surgery. This should be an exciting time for you as the weight should rapidly have begun to drop off. You can begin to experiment with foods you have eaten in the past. Remember to take it easy. Foods high in sugar or fat may not be tolerated by your digestive system. Meats and course foods may need to be softened with liquid.
For most people this will be a time of major change in their lives. In a few days time you will go from being able to consume thousands of calories in one sitting to being able to only consume an ounce of liquid at a time. The bariatric surgery high protein diet is temporary and will lead you to a new healthier body. Cherish this opportunity, but realize that the outcome is up to you. You have to take this tool and use it wisely.
A doctor should always be consulted before begining a new food plan.
